Coming clean

I don’t know where you’re at during this COVID-19 pandemic. Or how far beyond it you will be upon reading this post. For citizens here in Alabama, we’ve spent several weeks now practicing the recommended “Social Distancing”. A few days ago Governor Kay Ivey (along with Alabama State Attorney General Steve Marshall) issued a “Shelter in place” order. So we’re waiting, watching, and trying to foresee the outcome.

The rub of it is, we can’t pause our lives forever. We’re individuals.  We’re families, and life does carry on. It’s still springtime. For me, I spent yesterday in the sun, working on a few various fruit trees and in the garden. Because I work from home, I’m in and out of the house. One trip I saw dough on the counter. On the next trip, I smelled fresh bread. Even in the heat of the day, Barrett floated around me like a shadow. It felt like a day in your favorite black & white tv show. Allow me to sidebar here and say, “Go hug your wife.  Because our lives would truly crumble without them.”  Sidebar end.

Besides us, droves of people are working in their own flowerbeds or starting their first garden this year. Maybe you’re out there now, in town, and growing your first tomato plant. At some point, your work was done.  You came back to the house (just like me) and washed your hands. I looked down at the sink and saw the remnants of honest labor.  Only moment went by, but life slowed down and I reflected on the days small accomplishments. I believe, those moments are something we all could use more of.  As we battle COVID-19, I pray it’s something you’ve experienced.

Somewhat shorter than normal, but how has this COVID-19 pandemic pushed you to be more self-reliant?  Is this your first season growing something?  What’s been in your backyard all along that this has caused you to just notice or appreciate?  If you have gardening questions, email me at Nick@fivesonsfarm.net.  I will, in turn, ask my wife.  She’s the “Green Thumb”.

So, thanks for coming back, and if you’ve recently had your hands in the dirt, “Welcome to our tribe!”

Warmest Regards,

Nick
