Coffee Time with Farmer Jones, Session #1

Hey Reader! Raise your hand if you have a good idea of our day-to-day experience here at Five Sons Farm. Some days it’s just life, and we don’t think much of it. You simply manage the herd and move about the place. Yesterday, we picked up more storage containers, fence posts, and livestock feed. Then, it was just a trip home. Griffin came with me on deliveries and we even made a little stop at Cabelas. If you’re subscribed to the winter box, let everyone know how you’ve liked it and give us some feedback too.

First, cover what tomorrow will bring at Five Sons Farm. I suppose I should say “today,” because it’s about 0300 MT in the morning. Most likely, healthy, happy kids, a groggy wife, and work. The sheep will need hay. The chickens, dogs, cats, and rabbits will need fed and watered too. I’ll try to sneak a couple of hours of work in on the training pen for the pigs. If I get to it, I’ll spread more mulch in the chicken’s run, shoot .22’s with my sons, and help Courtney clean in the house. Have I glamorized it enough for the audience? It’s the real world, real work, and still (to me) really fun! The routine I escaped from my job in town was traded for a routine here on the farm. You’ve heard it here before though…the grass is greener. Also, this routine leads to a constant, visible improvement in my life.

I always tell my Dad that none of my dreams of success matter. I could walk away at a break-even point and do something else if I had to. What does matter is the time I’ve gained with my sons. I’m here every single day talking and teaching. I’ve learned a bit about myself in the process too. I’ve found breaking points that I previously didn’t think existed. I’d always snicker in my head when Courtney would call and vent frustrations about the kiddos acting like heathens. I’d think, “I’d do that and so much better.” A year and a half later, I’ve more than seen/felt exactly what she was talking about. Just don’t tell her I said so. But it’s all worth the gamble. In family, your sacrifice is their gain.

Now let’s slide over to something a bit more light-hearted. I suppose we could all use a little of that. Since “Coffee Time” is in the title, let’s discuss it. There are very few guilty pleasures I have in this world. Coffee is one of them. I (Farmer Jones) use a french press for my joe. I’ve had several coffee makers over my 15 years of indulgence, and I may switch to a different method tomorrow. For now, I enjoy the process and time it takes to make coffee. I hear you in the back row, “Farmer Jones, what about the sediment at the bottom of the press?” My response? It’s extra caffeine, why are you complaining?

Let’s recap together on today’s takeaways,

1. Do what you love, and love what you do.

2. Family first

3. Coffee makes life better.

God bless ya’ll,

Nick
